Greetings from Legazpi City, Philippines
I am now living in Legazpi City, Albay Province, Bicol Region, Philippines. I married Emma Espartinez Suruiz in September, 2002, and moved here to live permanently with her and her three children, Jefferson, Jereco and Julie May. I am a retired librarian, I moved here from Gainesville, Florida, U.S.A.

Ethnically, I am a Melungeon and I have done research on the history and origins of the Melungeon people. The photos on this page were taken at the Melungeon Fourth Union in Kingsport, TN, June 20-22, 2002, and are taken from Helen Campbell's webpage, as is the photo of the opening panel on my Melungeon page. The photo below is Helen and me. To find more information on the Melungeons, please go to the Melungeon page.

The two main books on the Melungeons are "Melungeons, The Resurection of a Proud People" by Brent Kennedy and "Melungeons Yesterday and Today" by Jean Patterson Bible. I self published a collection of class notes for an anthropology class on Melungeons and other old mixed race groups of eastern United States in 1994, the same year the first edition of Kennedy's book came out. It is very dated, much of it I no longer believe to be true, but it does have an extensive annotated bibliography which can help you get into the older literature. Also, it has a lot of my wry wit which some enjoy and by which some are deeply offended.
It has been put on-line by the Multiracial Activist in a much better format than my older posting of it, much easier to search.
I very grateful to James Landrith for doing this, including making the table of contents clickable, etc. The link is below.

Brief History
I was born in the Ozark mountains on the Missouri - Arkansas border two months after Hitler invaded Poland and started World War II. As a child, I lived in Missouri, Arkansas, Tennessee, Texas, Arizona and Nebraska. I was in Texas more than any other state and sometimes call it home, I lived in Fort Hancock, Sugarland, Victoria, Austin and Houston.

I got my A.A. degree from Victoria College in Victoria, Texas, my B.A. in zoology from the University of Texas in Austin, Texas, in 1960,my M.Ag. degree in animal science from the University of Florida in Gainesville, Florida, in 1980, and my M.L.S. in library science from the University of South Florida in Tampa, Florida in 1992. I did graduate study and research in genetics in Florida, England and Texas and in theology in Massachusetts. I taught high school in Zambia, England and Texas, spent over six years in rural African schools in Zambia.

My research at the University of Florida was on crossbreeding dairy cattle for milk production in the hot tropics. As a result of my research, I wrote a proposal for the creation of a new synthetic breed based on a four breed cross. This was published in the Indian Dairyman, the journal of the Indian Dairy Association. See my Synthetic Dairy Breed page for more information and some photos.

Melungeon Origins

Picture above is of Helen Campbell and me, taken at Fourth Union right after we finally met. I copied these photos from Helen's Melungeon site at http://www.melungeons.com/ - Thank you, Helen.

To read my ideas on Melungeon origins, see my article by clicking the button below. After Fourth Union, I realize this is very incomplete, there are some other main streams coming into the mix, particularly from Louisa county, VA, and the Upper Neck of colonial Virginia. The DNA study has found some intersting leads which confirms the presence of a large European/West Asian/Mediterranean element and smaller African and Native American elements, some element tentatively identified as Siddhi or Afro-Indian but which I think may be Bantu from the same region of Africa where the Siddhi originated, and some distinctive West and Central Asian elements.
