Mike Nassau
I have recently moved to Legazpi City, Philippines, and have married Emma Espartinez Suruiz (now Emma Nassau). We have three children, Julie May (13), Jerico (15) and Jefferson (17).
I am a retired librarian, I also have taught high school and have done research and study in genetics. I am an American, I have lived in several states in America and also in Zambia and England. I moved here from Gainesville, Florida.

Interests and Personality
Ethnically, I am a Melungeon. Melungeons arean old mixed group found primarily in Virginia, North Carolina, Tennessee and Kentucky, for more information on them see my Home and Links pages.
I love food, I especially like Chinese, Thai and Indian food, try to fix some Indian dishes myself. I have never tried Philippine food, but I think it must be somewhat like Chinese and Thai, so I expect to like it. I do not drink, smoke or use illegal drugs of any kind. I like soft, gentle music, easy listening, folk ballads, or soft country or rhythm and blues. I like comedies and funny things, things that make me happy. I tend to avoid sad or depressing movies and shows, etc. I love to travel and go sight-seeing. I am very interested in history and archeology, also biology and evolution. I do not like violence, including violent sports, I do not like to watch boxing, wrestling, American football, action movies, kung fu, etc. I like pretty things, flowers, butterflies, wildlife, etc. I am an animal lover, especially dogs and other canids.

Religion, Politics and Social Concerns
I am a liberal in most matters. In religion, I am a Freethinker, meaning I accept no authority such as a church or Bible or Qur'an telling me what to believe. I am a Pantheist, I believe that God is the Universe with its organization or order, and that the whole is definitely greater than the sum of its parts. I attended theological school for one year studying for the ministry in the Unitarian-Universalist Church and belong to that church. I do not believe in an anthropomorphic god, a god man has created in his own image, a jealous god who wants our worship and praise, who hears our prayers and will give us aid against our competitors, who knows if we have been naughty or nice, like Santa Claus. I feel strongly that the main element in religion should be love, compassion and responsibility. Ethical behavior towards others is the primary manifestation of religion. For information on Pantheism, Ethical and Humanistic Religion, see the links at the bottom of my Links page. I hope this statement doesn't frighten anyone away, I am not anti-religious or intolerant, I just don't want anyone trying to force their beliefs on me.
I have no intentions of getting involved in Philippine politics, but I have always been a liberal or leftist in America. I support government provision of education and health care to everyone, for example. I was active in the Civil Rights Movement, the movement against the war in Vietnam, and the movement for reproductive freedom. I was particularly active in the Anti-Apartheid Movement working for freedom in South Africa.
I do not try to impose my views on others, I try to be tolerant of other positions at all times, and I expect tolerance from my friends and associates. Being socially concerned, caring about others, is important to me, I hope to find friends who share these values.
